Our R&D team is based in Milton Park near Oxford and specializes in a number of disciplines including molecular microbiology, biochemistry, fermentation, chemical process development, and synthetic chemistry. We have an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving, which provides creative solutions for commercial applications. We also focus on wider societal challenges, including responsible research and innovation.
Clostridium microbial biocatalysts
Our extensive library of Clostridium microbial strains are used as biocatalysts as part of our advanced fermentation process. These high performing industrial strains are capable of delivering high yields of bio n-butanol and bio-acetone during fermentation.
Our adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) technology allows us to improve strain performance and tolerance to inhibitors, while maintaining non-GMO status.
Engineering cell metabolism to produce new molecules
Our patented CRISPR-Cas based gene editing technology (CLEAVE™) enables us to make targeted modifications to expand our product range beyond bio-acetone and bio-butanol. This is paving the way for a new generation of high-performing, high-value renewable chemicals derived from microbial fermentation.
A Patented Process Producing Competitive Products
Our highly efficient fermentation technology can be used for the conversion of both corn starch and cellulosic derived sugars into renewable specialty chemicals. Compared to traditional fermentation methods, our platform allows us to make bio-based solvents through a process that can compete in the marketplace with petro-derived equivalents.
